More than a Tourist

Oh What a Journey

More than Tourism

Have you ever visited a country and wondered if you could be more than a tourist? Many countries we visit have other areas of the economy they can depend on but many such as Cuba rely heavily on and almost solely on tourism. So when a pandemic happens and tourism stops what do they do? But the question is, what can we do to help? Many groups are doing the best they can like Not Just Tourists, who provide a medical suitcase for you to deliver to a local hospital near where you are vacationing.

What Supplies Can You Bring

Can you really know what is needed and where can you find this info? There are many Facebook groups to help you be more than a tourist on your vacation, I have listed a few below. But from experience, I can offer a few options here to bring.

  • Feminine products (preferably Tampons for the entertainment team)
  • Toothpaste and toothbrushes
  • Soaps, shampoos, and deodorant
  • Over-the-counter medicine, acetaminophen, ibuprofen, etc. This is apparently in very short supply now

Also, consider the items you pack, are there times you can leave them behind? Some extra shorts, a t-shirt maybe soap, shampoo or hand cream.

If you look up a group for the country you are visiting you can ask the members who have travelled to that country for advice on what would be best needed.

Distribution is Key

So you have the supplies and now where do you hand them out to have the biggest impact? Of course, your first thought is the hotel staff and yes they are very deserving of your generosity. But there are other ways to make an impact in a community. Bring supplies to a local hospital, venturing outside the resort to local towns, and ask the receptionist or the travel agent. Don’t forget about the workers on site that often get overlooked, yes the housekeeping and bartenders are often gifted with items but what about the gardeners, the gym staff, and the daycare staff?

Being More Than a Tourist

I had the opportunity on y recent trip to Cuba to deliver a bag of medical supplies to a small local hospital near Holquin in a small town called Rafael Freyre. They were so grateful and appreciative that we even thought to consider this. I met the manager and nurse of the hospital and exchanged emails so that next time I can reach out ahead of time and ask what is needed that I could bring.

More than a tourist

Don’t get me wrong, this post is not to make you feel guilty about your trip. Hopefully, this just brings some awareness. As a travel agent, I try to inform my clients of all the opportunities available to them. Enjoy your vacation and have fun, if you can do a little bit of good along the way, amazing! My recent trip to Holguin Cuba was amazing, let me share details of this hotel with you.
