Tourists and The Junk we Love to Collect

Travel backpacks

When do we switch from tourists to travelers? What is it about the junk we collect as we move through life? As we have said many times, we hope to become full-time travelers. Right now we are getting ready to move again, and I look at all of the boxes and wonder how will we ever do it. I think to myself I want to throw it all away but as I pick something up the intellectual side of me gets squashed by the emotional. And I add another box to the pile. Why do we keep it?

Declutter?

I’ve read something recently about how to declutter. It says to pick up something and if it speaks to you keep it. Damn, everything screams at me. <sigh> Some day I hope. For now, I’m looking around at the towers of boxes and dream of living in a converted van, a small apartment in Spain or an RV traveling the world.
(I’d like to give credit to the declutter person. If you know, please post so I can link back. I think it’s a book you buy)

  1. Decluttering is the most difficult of challenges. When Alan and I started the process we found that there were many things that we loved and decided that those items that held great emotional value would be photographed and given to family members. Having 8 kids made this an easy step. But we did find that once we started the process of scanning, photographing and shipping our most beloved possessions to those who would also appreciate them that the entire process got easier and easier. Eventually, more than two years later, we had gone from a 3 bedroom house with a 2 car garage to boarding a plane headed to France with just 100 pounds of “stuff” each, which included our clothing, camera and computer tech gear and a little dog! Good luck with the process, in the end you’ll enjoy your new lifestyle!
